UAE Labour Law Guide

Complete Guide: Annual Leave & UAE Format

Leave applications in the United Arab Emirates follow a professional and formal business structure. It is important to align your requests with the rights and obligations stated in the UAE Labour Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021).

Annual Leave: Under Article 29, employees are entitled to a minimum of 30 calendar days of fully paid annual leave per year after completing one year of service. If you have been employed for more than six months but less than one year, you are entitled to two days per month. Leave requests should clearly state dates and handover plans to minimize business disruption.

Sick Leave: Under Article 31, after completing the probationary period, employees are entitled to up to 90 days of sick leave per year. This is paid as: 15 days at full pay, 30 days at half pay, and the remaining 45 days unpaid. Employers generally require a medical certificate from recognized health authorities (such as DHA, MOHAP, or DoH) to approve paid sick leave.

Maternity & Parental Leave: Article 30 grants female employees 60 days of maternity leave (45 days at full pay, followed by 15 days at half pay). In addition, Article 32 grants 5 days of paid parental leave for both mothers and fathers, to be taken consecutively or non-consecutively within six months of the child's birth.

Other Leaves: Employees are also legally entitled to Compassionate leave (5 days for the death of a spouse, 3 days for a parent, child, or sibling), Study leave (10 days if enrolled in an approved UAE educational institution), and an unpaid Hajj leave (up to 30 days, granted only once during the entire employment period).
