Paternity Leave Request in Barbados: Three Weeks Under the Family Leave Act 2025
Quick answer

Barbados’s Family Leave Act, 2025-25 was assented to on 17 October 2025 and is deemed effective from 1 June 2025. Section 7 provides at least three weeks of paternity leave. It may be taken continuously or split into at least two weeks in the first three months after the birth and at least one week before the child turns six months. The Act also requires at least 12 months’ continuous employment with the employer and at least four weeks’ notice. NIS paternity benefit is a separate payment with its own contribution rules.

This guide explains the statutory points to check before applying and provides a letter you can customise. Use it as a starting point, then confirm your documents and workplace procedure before submitting the request.

How long is paternity leave in Barbados?

Section 7 of the Family Leave Act, 2025-25 provides no less than three weeks of paternity leave. It may be taken as one continuous period or split, with at least two weeks chosen within the first three months after the birth and at least one week before the child reaches six months. An eligible male employee is entitled to only one paternity leave benefit within a 12-month period.

Who qualifies under the Act?

Section 5 requires at least 12 months of continuous employment with the employer from whom the leave is requested. The employee must provide a certificate from a medical practitioner showing the expected birth date, or a medical practitioner or midwife certificate showing the actual birth date. The Act also calls for a document signed by the woman stating that the employee is the father of the child. An employer may accept other reasonable evidence in the circumstances.

How much notice is required?

The Act says the employee must give the employer no less than four weeks’ notice before the actual date of the leave requested. If the birth date or circumstances make the usual notice impracticable, contact HR promptly and ask what alternative evidence or procedure the employer will accept. Keep copies of the request and the response.

Is paternity leave the same as NIS paternity benefit?

No. The employment leave entitlement in the Family Leave Act and the cash paternity benefit administered by the National Insurance and Social Security Service are related but distinct matters. NIS states that the paternity benefit is payable for three weeks and has contribution eligibility requirements, including 26 contribution weeks and 16 contributions for employed persons. Confirm the current NIS checklist, payment calculation and claim deadline directly with NIS; do not assume that the employer and NIS perform the same role in every case.

What should the letter include?

Identify yourself, your role, the expected or actual birth date, the requested leave dates and a brief handover plan. Mention the medical evidence and father-confirmation document required by the Act, and ask HR to confirm whether any company forms are needed. Keep the request professional and share only the personal information necessary to process it.
